Serving Others

Guests at The Mustard Seed often volunteer to help out…

Jim has volunteered to serve The Mustard Seed meal for the past three nights. He is staying at another shelter but comes to The Mustard Seed for his meals. He just moved here four days ago from Fort Nelson, BC where he was working in the oil patch. The drilling in his area was slowing down so he decided to move here.

Three days ago he was standing in line waiting for a meal. One of the staff was going through the line-up looking for volunteers to help serve the meal and Jim volunteered.

He enjoyed the experience so much he has been back to help out regularly since.

He says, “I see people in worse condition than myself. I don’t come down so hard on myself. It makes me feel good to help people. I’m 47 and in good health, I know a lot of people who aren’t. I’m looking for a job now with the larger oil companies. It just takes a bit of time but for now I can be warm and dry while I volunteer.”
