Home for the Holidays

Help someone celebrate their first Christmas in a home of their own. As our guests make the transition from homelessness to a home, you can help ensure that this holiday season is one they’ll never forget! This Christmas, The Mustard Seed would like to provide each of our newly-housed men and women with a special gift, chosen just for them. You, your family, school, workplace, youth group or community group can welcome someone home for the holidays by providing:

  • A monetary contribution of $75 to purchase a Christmas gift that is hand-selected by staff for a newly-housed individual
  • A Christmas card or note, expressing encouragement and well-wishes for the recipient. To sponsor an individual through the Home for the Holidays program, please contact us directly at 403-269-1381 ext. 222.

Backpacks

One of the best gifts the men and women who stay at The Mustard Seed’s Emergency Shelter can receive this holiday season is also one of the most practical. Many of our guests carry all their possessions on their back, so receiving a new, gift-filled backpack provides encouragement and assistance during this time of the year when they need it the most.

Purchase a backpack and, leaving room for our guests’ personal belongings, pack it half-full with some of these gifts:

  • Warm socks
  • Men’s underwear
  • $5-$10 Gift Cards for coffee, movies or food (please write the $ amount on the card)*
  • Transit tickets*
  • Scarf
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves
  • 15$ watch
  • Large Ziploc freezer bags
  • Hand warmers
  • Chocolate and/or candy
  • Travel mug
  • Water bottle
  • Men’s jogging pants
  • Earplugs
  • A Christmas card or personal note signed (with first names only)

*Please note that transit tickets and gift cards may be removed and redistributed to ensure that all Christmas gifts are as equitable as possible.

** Please do not include food items or any items containing an alcohol base, such as mouthwash or perfume.

Please drop off all Christmas backpacks no later than December 22, 2013 and call 403-269-1319.

Food Hampers

Even though it’s a simple gift, being able to enjoy a traditional holiday feast can make a big difference for a struggling individual or family this Christmas.

To pack a food hamper, please include the following items:

  • Canned vegetables
  • Potatoes (fresh or dehydrated)
  • Boxed stuffing (e.g. Stove Top dressing)
  • Gravy mix packages
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Pickles
  • 2L bottle of juice/pop
  • Coffee or tea
  • Non-refrigerated dessert
  • 1 tinfoil roaster

Turkey & Ham Jam

The Mustard Seed is also accepting donations of small hams, chickens and turkeys for distribution with all Christmas food hampers. Hams, chickens and turkeys can be dropped off at The Mustard Seed starting December 6. Please contact us at 403-269-1319.
